Hummingbird…don’t fly away!

I sat out on our deck day after day during my healing process—sometimes I would read, write, rest, or just watch. Watching what I originally thought—my tiny corner of the world. Yet, as I waited and watched, I came to realize the world right outside my French doors was not all that tiny. I had deemed it tiny simply because I hadn’t taken the time to sit and observe.

Take for instance, our hummingbird feeder with its inviting red colored water. At first, I thought only the ants and an occasional bee noticed the feeder. But, I was wrong! Day after day, I eagerly watched as a persistent hummingbird made his way to our feeder, patiently rested, and sipped from the brew—sometimes for just a few seconds at a time. He’d take his fill, note the budding flower beside the feeder, and check my status on the deck, and dash away as suddenly as he appeared.

Originally, I had him pegged a “morning only” sipper. Next day, I spotted him in the early evening hours. Today, it was after lunch right after a heavy rain fell consistently throughout the morning. After over a week of watching, I really couldn’t say exactly what time of day to expect him buzzing in and out.

Many times I tried to capture him on my camera—only to startle him and cause him to exit quickly. So, I resigned myself to the idea that others will just have to believe me when I say that we have a “regular” showing up on our veggie-flower deck in my corner of the map. Hummingbirds, bees, and ants know for certain we do exist.

And then—it happened!  My husband, Steve, got the brilliant idea to set up his camera on a tripod complete with a remote. That way, when our flighty visitor swooped in and out, I only had to push the remote button and we’d have a picture for proof.  So, I waited and waited some more.

As you can see by the photo, my patience and Steve’s ingenious ways brought with it a reward.  Not only did the original hummingbird return, but he brought company with him! How thrilling to capture the two of them in our corner of the world.

evidences of love…

The tell-tale signs of my hospital stay are still visible. Bruised purplish-brown marks on top of my left hand where the IV port remained lodged as life-giving fluids worked their way into my system.  There’s a greenish-purple bruise adorning my left thigh where the nurse shot me with a serum to prevent clogging in my legs while I lay bedridden.  Another purple spot on my abdomen marks the site of another anti-blood clot shot for my legs.

I believe I can safely say missed dates, trips, and vacation, weakness, fatigue, discomfort, and inconveniences…these issues will pass. Looking at the flipside though, I see evidences of love, friendships, care and concerns—these evidences of sickness will not pass nor be forgotten:

Dispensing of medications, food preparation and clean-up by hubby, phone calls, emails, assurances of prayers, cards, visits, flowers, homemade chicken noodle soup, hugs and words of affirmation such as, “We missed you so much.  The place just hasn’t seemed the same around here without you!”

That’s what makes family and friends special, and makes me feel wanted, special, and a part of a greater good.  Just confirms that life is worth living and I do matter to others & they matter to me!

Release from pulmonary doctor!

My lungs sounded good and x-rays showed nothing unusual! Doctor basically confirmed what was thought to be excess fluid from all the IV pumped fluid during my hospital stay.  I have been released from the pulmonary doctor’s care!  Yeah!!  Praise the Lord!!

I thanked him for being available when we needed him, but nothing personal, we were thrilled we didn’t need any additional doctors in our life at this time.

is your spiritual account overflowing?

My Aunt from Indiana just emailed me this story,

“My daughter-in-law and I went to the movie today and a lady and her husband two seats away left before we did.  I noticed she had left her purse on the floor and ran out to the lobby to return it to her.  They were running back and met me with open arms.  He said, “With what we have seen of your Spiritual Account, you must be a very rich lady.”

My Aunt then left me with these parting words, ‘May your Spiritual Account be overflowing!’ and so, I leave you with those same words, my caring family and friends!

Who Am I Becoming?

Come share with us…Calvary Church women have launched a summer blog series entitled, “Who Am I Becoming?”

I am priviledged to share my story, “Becoming Dependent on God: Transformed by Calamity” in this week’s post.  I share with the reader from the beginning of learning of my brain tumor and subsequent feelings and actions.  Fear of the unknown played a key role in my behavior, yet fear needn’t be all consuming.  Read the story of how my giant called ‘fear’ turned into the peace of God.  Every week various women from Calvary will share their experiences and insight…you won’t want to miss a single week!

Gift of Time

To face life’s many challenges and overcome each test, the Lord tells us to take the time

To stop.  To pray.  To rest. – (Sper)

The Lord is teaching me to stop, to pray, and to rest during this down time of poor health. He certainly has my attention, and I pray I learn what I need to learn during this gift of time.

Back on Line

Thanks to my faithful readers for your patience.  We experienced a glitch in the computer system, immediately followed by a glitch in my internal body system.  It appears the computer system glitch has been resolved, and as far as my internal system–well, that’s still a work in progress!

In the last month, I’ve spent two sessions in ER due to dehydration (including a ride in an ambulance from Urgent Care to the hospital!)  The second ER visit resulted in a few overnights in ICU to try and stabilize my vitals.  GI doctor has now labeled my condition as: “Lymphocytic Colitis” which is treatable with meds and bland diet.  So, to have a name to label my chronic internal combustion problem is truly an answer to prayer!

Thank you all who’ve been diligent to offer kind words of encouragement and prayer for us.  My husband, Steve, has been a wonderful caretaker now that I’m home from the hospital.  He makes sure I take my meds and drink Gatorade and Pedialyte (I’ve grown to hate that stuff!)  My dear friend, Vicki, brought over her special homemade chicken noodle soup which I’m sure has speeded my healing tremendously!

Just thankful to God to be alive and able to sit up at my own computer and sleep in my own bed at night!
